Grape Island Mission: Methodist missionaries built houses, meeting houses and a school for Mississauga Indians on Grape Island in the Bay of Quinte. The Mississaugas had ceded the mainland in the Gunshot Treaty of 1787 but kept the islands. When they appealed to Bishop John Strachan, a staunch Anglican and the attorney-general of Upper Canada, to help them confirm their land claims, he refused. He said he might be more sympathetic if they joined the Church of England. In 1836 the Indians were moved to Rice Lake when the Methodists realized the 11-acre (4.45-hectare) island was too small to support the native population.
