Follow the fault. Broken lines indicate Precambrian faults or deformation zones in Eastern Ontario. Although Hastings County rests far from the active earthquake edge of a tectonic plate, the earth’s crust below is fragmented by fault lines. Many obvious geological features, such as the St. Lawrence River valley, follow subterranean fault lines. Note that a fault line runs northeast beneath Pickering, site of a nuclear power plant. There is little geological movement in Eastern Ontario.
